The best villains can be evil, but there’s always a vulnerability. My particular favourite was James Cagney — his energy, his aggression, his pistol-quick dialogue, and that tremendous vulnerability that he had. He’d scare you, but he’d also make you cry. And that, to me, is the mark of a great, great villain.
